How do I change or add text-to-speech voices?

Open Options (gear icon in the toolbar popup) and go to Voice Settings. Pick a preferred voice for each language and use the test button to hear it. Sonic Translate uses your browser's voices, so to add more, install voices in your operating system's speech settings.

How do I pick a voice for a language?

1. Click the Sonic Translate icon in your toolbar, then the gear icon to open Options.
2. Open the Voice Settings section.
3. Find your language and choose a voice from its dropdown. The list shows only languages that have at least one voice installed on your system.
4. Click the test button next to a voice to hear a sample before deciding.

Your choice applies wherever text-to-speech plays: the speaker buttons in the quick popup and the full panel. Press Escape to stop playback at any time.

How do I set a US or UK English accent?

In Options, under Other Settings, choose an English accent: Auto, US, or UK. Auto uses whatever English voice your system prefers; US or UK limits English speech to voices with that accent. This is separate from the per-language picker, so you can set the accent once and still fine-tune the exact voice in Voice Settings.

Where do the voices come from?

From your own browser and operating system, via the Web Speech API. Sonic Translate ships no voices and runs no audio service — playback uses whatever voices your browser and OS provide. Most run entirely on your device; some browsers also include cloud-backed voices operated by the browser vendor. The trade-off: voice coverage depends on what your system ships with, so not every one of the 109 supported languages will have a voice on every machine.

How do I install more voices?

Install voices at the operating-system level, then restart your browser so they show up in Voice Settings.

Can it pronounce the original text automatically?

Yes. In Options, under Other Settings, turn on Pronounce original text (off by default). After each translation, Sonic Translate reads the original selection aloud using your chosen voice for that language.
