Privacy Policy

Last updated:

Sonic Translate is designed so that there is almost nothing to write a privacy policy about: the extension has no accounts, no analytics, and no developer servers. This page describes, precisely, the little that does happen — in the extension and on this website. For a plain-language walkthrough, see how Sonic Translate handles your data.

Browser Extension

What we don't collect

  • We do not track your browsing activity
  • We do not collect analytics or telemetry of any kind
  • We do not store your translations on any server — we operate no servers
  • We do not require an account
  • We do not sell or share any data with anyone

What the extension stores in your browser

  • Your settings — languages, shortcuts, and toggles — in your browser's extension storage (your browser's own sync may carry these between your devices; that sync is operated by your browser vendor, not by us)
  • Your translation history — up to 100 entries, stored locally on your device only; you can clear it or disable it entirely in the extension

The one network request

When you trigger a translation, the text you selected and the language codes are sent over HTTPS to Google Translate, which produces the translation. This is the extension's only network communication, and it happens only when you trigger it. Google's handling of that request is described in Google's Privacy Policy.

This Website

The website sets only the functional cookies the underlying framework needs (session and request-security tokens). It uses no tracking cookies, no advertising identifiers, and no third-party trackers.

Download clicks

When you click an install button, we record: the browser you chose, a salted one-way hash of your IP address (we cannot recover the address from it; it exists only to filter duplicates), your browser's user-agent string, the referring page, and campaign parameters if present. This tells us how many people install the extension — nothing in it identifies you.

Uninstall survey

If you answer the optional question on the uninstall page, we store the answer and any comment you write — and nothing else. No IP address, no identifiers.

Aggregate usage statistics

If enabled, this website measures page visits with self-hosted, cookieless analytics running on our own domain. It counts visits in aggregate without cookies or cross-site identifiers, and no data goes to any third party.

Data Retention

  • Extension data: lives only in your browser; we never have it
  • Download-click and survey records: kept as long-term aggregate statistics; the underlying rows contain no recoverable personal identifiers

Your Rights

You can request a copy or deletion of any data connected to you — though, as described above, we hold essentially none. Contact [email protected] for any privacy-related request and we'll respond promptly.
