About Sonic Translate
Sonic Translate is a free browser extension that translates the text you select with one keystroke. It is built by WebEnchant, a small independent software studio in New Zealand.
Why it exists
Browsers translate whole pages well, but they never shipped the obvious thing: a keyboard shortcut to translate the text you're actually looking at. People keep asking for one — in Google's support forums, on Mozilla Connect — and keep getting the same answer: right-click, or copy-paste into a translator tab.
Sonic Translate is that missing shortcut. Select text, press Ctrl+E, read the translation next to your selection, keep reading. That single interaction — made as fast and unobtrusive as we could make it — is the whole product.
Principles
- One job, done instantly. No sidebars full of AI features, no language-learning suite bolted on. Selection translation with a dictionary, done well.
- 100% free. No ads. No account. Powered by Google Translate; we run no servers of our own.
- Private by default. No analytics, no telemetry. The only network call the extension makes is the translation itself. Read exactly what happens to your data.
- Honest about limits. Sonic Translate does not translate whole pages — your browser already does that well. Our docs say so and recommend the built-in tools where they're the right answer.
