Is Sonic Translate really free?

Last updated:

Yes. Sonic Translate is 100% free. There are no ads, no account to create, no paid tiers, and nothing to unlock — every feature works the moment you install it. You select text, press Ctrl+E, and get your translation. That is the whole product.

How can it be free?

Because there is almost nothing to pay for. We use Google Translate to produce translations and run no servers of our own. No servers means no infrastructure bill, and no bill means no reason to charge you, show you ads, or sell your data to cover costs.

Is there a catch?

No. There is no data business behind the extension either. No tracking by us: no analytics, no telemetry, no developer server. Selected text is sent only to Google Translate over HTTPS to produce your translation. Your translation history stays on your device, and you can clear or disable it any time. The details are on the privacy page.

What do I get without paying?

Everything, because there is only one version:

  • Translate any text you select on any webpage in one keystroke — Ctrl+E for the quick popup, Shift+E for the full panel
  • 109 languages, powered by Google Translate
  • Dictionary with definitions by part of speech, reverse translations, and synonyms
  • Pronunciation using your browser's voices
  • Local translation history — up to 100 entries, stored only on your device

Is it a free trial?

No. There is no trial period, no translation limit, and no meter counting how much you use it. Install it from the Chrome Web Store and translate as much as you want. Nothing is held back for a paid tier, because there is no paid tier.
