How do I change the translation keyboard shortcut?

Last updated:

Open Sonic Translate's Options page (gear icon in the toolbar popup), go to Keyboard Shortcuts, click the shortcut field, press any two-key combo, and click Save. You can change both shortcuts: the quick popup (default Ctrl+E) and the full panel (default Shift+E).

How do I record a new shortcut?

  1. Click the Sonic Translate icon in your browser toolbar, then click the gear icon to open Options.
  2. Find the Keyboard Shortcuts section.
  3. Click the field for the shortcut you want to change — the quick popup or the full panel.
  4. Press your new combination. It must be at least two keys: Ctrl, Shift, Alt, or ⌘ plus one more key.
  5. Click Save.

The change takes effect immediately — select text on any webpage and press your new combo to translate the selection.

What are the default shortcuts?

Shortcut What it does
Ctrl+E Opens the quick translation popup next to your selected text
Shift+E Opens the full side panel with dictionary, synonyms, and history

Escape closes any open popup or panel and stops audio playback.

What is the default shortcut on Mac?

Ctrl+E — the same as on Windows and Linux, not ⌘E. If you prefer a ⌘ combo, record one: click the shortcut field, press ⌘ plus your key of choice, and click Save.

How do I reset the shortcuts to the defaults?

Click Reset to defaults in the Keyboard Shortcuts section. Both shortcuts return to Ctrl+E (quick popup) and Shift+E (full panel).

Why isn't my new shortcut working?

Shortcuts never run on browser-internal pages: chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, the built-in PDF viewer, and the new-tab page. If your combo fails on a normal webpage, it may clash with a browser or website shortcut — record a different combination, or see what to do when the shortcut isn't working.
